About Us The questionnaire and navigational task form part of an ongoing doctoral project undertaken by Mr. Robert White at the Department of Architecture, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. The project is currently in its second year. The motivation for this research emerged after the researcher's diagnosis with an eye condition during his undergraduate studies, resulting in loss of central vision and colour blindness. Since then, his outlook on the world has changed dramatically. The research primarily focuses on designing more accessible urban environments rather than internal domestic or institutional settings. In doing so, it will enable individuals with sight loss to feel more comfortable and safe when navigating through the city and therefore encourage more independent travel. The ultimate aim is to highlight the current barriers to access within the built environment, with the expectation to change the attitude of architects and designers as to the problems encountered by the visually impaired population on a daily basis. Accessible city environments should be a reality for everyone |
